Barva Nocturno – Illuminated Pochote Wood Relief

⚬ SOLD — Available for commission in a new form ⚬

Every night, from the balcony, the volcano watches over the valley below.

This is not a painting. It is not a photograph. It is a landscape carved directly into the soul of a Pochote slab — one of Costa Rica's most prized hardwoods — and brought to life after dark.

Barva Nocturno captures a clouded night over Volcán Barva as seen from the artist's own home in Costa Rica. The turbulent sky is rendered in shou sugi ban — an ancient Japanese technique of controlled charring — creating a deep, textured darkness that shifts between black, brown, and violet depending on the light. Below, the mountain's slopes descend into a constellation of hand-placed LED lights that trace the streets, towns, and homes of the communities that live in Barva's shadow.

By day, it is a striking sculptural relief in raw and charred Pochote. By night, it becomes something else entirely.

This piece has been sold. It is shown here as part of the Madera Zeledon portfolio. A new commission inspired by this work can be created — contact us to discuss your vision.
